(2) Remove SEEDS — a few accidentally swallowed seeds are unlikely to harm most dogs, but a quantity can cause intestinal irritation or blockage; seedless watermelon is easiest. (3) Feed in MODERATION — watermelon (like all treats) should be no more than 10% of the dog's daily calories; too much causes GI upset, loose stool, gas, and bloating. (4) Cut into appropriately sized, bite-size pieces to prevent choking. (5) Give only PLAIN fresh fruit — avoid store-bought watermelon juice, candy, or flavored products, which may contain added sugar, preservatives, or the sweetener XYLITOL, which is highly toxic to dogs. (6) Dogs that are diabetic or overweight should have natural sugars limited; check with a vet.
