Coffea spp. (beverage/beans); active toxin caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) ยท Rubiaceae
Highly ToxicAlso toxic to cats
Coffee is highly toxic to dogs.
Why it's toxic
The toxic compounds in coffee:
- Caffeine (a methylxanthine)
- Related methylxanthines (e.g. theophylline, theobromine) present in coffee
Symptoms to watch for
If your dog ate coffee, watch for:
- Hyperactivity, restlessness, jitteriness, agitation
- Increased/abnormal heart rate (tachycardia) and heart rhythm changes
- Elevated blood pressure
- Excessive panting
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Excessive thirst and urination
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures / convulsions

- Hyperthermia (elevated body temperature)
- In large ingestions: collapse, organ damage (heart, liver, kidneys, CNS), and death
What to do if your dog ate it
- 1Remove your dog's access to the coffee and check how much may have been eaten.
- 2Do NOT induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control expert specifically tells you to.
- 3Call your veterinarian, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661 right away.
- 4Note the amount eaten, the time, and your dog's weight and any symptoms โ have this ready for the expert.
- 5Follow professional guidance and go to the nearest emergency vet if you are advised to.
A consultation fee may apply to the Pet Poison Helpline. When in doubt, contact your own veterinarian or nearest emergency clinic.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a small lick of brewed coffee dangerous for my dog?
- One or two licks of brewed coffee is unlikely to cause poisoning in most dogs, but it is never safe to offer coffee. The danger rises sharply with body size: caffeine toxicity can begin around 9 mg per pound of body weight, so a small dog can be affected by a surprisingly small amount. If your dog drank more than a lick, contact a vet or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661).
- Are coffee grounds or whole beans worse than a cup of coffee?
- Yes. Unused coffee grounds, whole or ground beans, espresso, and caffeine pills/supplements are far more concentrated than a brewed cup and are the most dangerous forms. Dogs that raid the trash for used or fresh grounds can ingest a large, life-threatening caffeine dose. This is treated as a veterinary emergency.
- How quickly do symptoms appear and how long do they last?
- Signs typically begin within 1 to 2 hours of ingestion and can persist for 12 to 36 hours because caffeine is slowly metabolized. Early signs are restlessness and a racing heart, progressing to tremors and seizures. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen, seek veterinary care immediately if ingestion is suspected.
